U.S. Chicken, Turkey Exports in January Post Gains in Value

U.S. chicken and turkey exports in January 2022 both increased in value compared to January 2021, according to new trade data released by Trade Data Monitor, with chicken export value, propelled by big gains in China, hitting a historical high for the month.

Chicken export value reached $378.1 million, up 22.8 percent (Figure 1), a record for the month of January, although chicken export volume fell 4.5 percent compared to January 2021 to 289,648 metric tons.Chicken shipments to China soared in January 2022, reaching 51,327 metric tons, up 32.4 percent from the same month a year earlier, while export value hit $94.6 million, up 52.2 percent.

Meanwhile, turkey export value for January 2022 jumped up 33.8 percent, reaching $44.1 million (Figure 2). Turkey export volume in January 2022 was 13,248 metric tons, down 16.2 percent from January 2021. The decrease is due partly to lower U.S. domestic turkey production.

Total egg exports (table eggs plus egg products in shell egg equivalent) for January 2022 were 16.8 million dozen, down 35.4 percent from the same month a year earlier. Export value was $18.1 million, off 11.5 percent (Figure 3). Table egg exports for January 2022 were 7.0 million dozen, down 46.6 percent from the same month a year earlier, while export value was $8.2 million, down 28.7 percent, due largely to decreased exports to Mexico. For egg products, January exports were 2,405 metric tons, down 23.3 percent from the same month of last year, while export value reached $9.9 million, up 11.1 percent.
