Traffic backups clog Texas-Mexico border

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed border security agreements late Thursday with two more Mexican states, prompting hope that this week’s troublesome traffic jams at U.S.- Mexico border crossings might ease and allow trucks to cross without further serious delays.

The deals with the State of Chihuahua and the State of Coahuila came after an agreement was reached earlier with the State of Nuevo León, each of which enhances border security, Abbott said.

As a result, it is hoped that inspection times at the border, which had significantly increased and had sparked protests by truckers who blocked traffic, would be reduced.

There was no word as of Friday afternoon regarding a possible similar agreement between Texas and the state of Tamaulipas, home of the Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa crossings. Both crossings are in the top three largest border crossings for U.S. poultry shipments.
