Broiler exports set records in first quarter

U.S. broiler exports for the first quarter of this year set an all-time high in both volume and value, while turkey exports hit an all-time high in value according to new trade data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).

Broiler exports for the first quarter of this year were 951,645 metric tons, up 5.5 percent from the same period of last year, while export value reached $1.213 billion, up 23.3 percent (Figure 1). Of the total shipment, 58.0 percent or 551,823 tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, China, Cuba, Taiwan, Canada, and the Philippines.

Cumulative turkey exports for January through March this year were 48,730 metric tons, down 17.6 percent from the same period a year earlier, while export value reached $163.0 million, up 26.6 percent (Figure 2). The decrease in exports is due largely to HPAI detections in some important turkey-producing states such as Minnesota and Indiana. About 1.7 million commercial turkey meat birds were affected by the end of March 2022. Of the total quantity exported, 85.6 percent or 41,725 metric tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, China, Canada, Benin, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, with Mexico alone accounting for 70.9 percent or 34,554 metric tons.
