Broiler export volume down, while egg export value soared

U.S. broiler export volume for the first seven months of this year decreased by 2.3 percent from the same period of last year, while egg export value increased 37.3 percent, according to new trade data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. Turkey export volume for July jumped 32.1 percent, while the cumulative seven-month tonnage was down 2.1 percent.

Mexico, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Georgia, Iraq, Peru, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Congo (Brazzaville), Dominican Republic, Qatar, Benin, Jamaica, Libya, and Guatemala registered tremendous gains in broiler exports from the same period a year earlier.

Broiler exports for the first seven months of this year were 2,138,567 metric tons, down 2.3 percent from the same period of last year, while export value was $2.772 billion, down 8.5 percent (Figure 1). Of the total shipment, 56.7 percent or 1,212,869 tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, China, Taiwan, Cuba, Philippines, and Canada.

Shipments to Mexico in January-July 2023 were 416,324 metric tons, up 14.0 percent from the same period a year earlier. During the same period, Brazilian chicken exports to Mexico reached 99,579 metric tons, up 4.2 percent year over year, while Chilean chicken exports to Mexico were 11,101 metric tons, down 30.4 percent.

Exports to China decreased by 24.5 percent to 277,969 tons (of which 66.3 percent or 184,332 metric tons were chicken paws), while shipments to Taiwan increased by 14.9 percent to 184,964 tons. Exports to other important markets were Cuba, 161,985 tons, up 0.5 percent; Philippines, 87,181 tons, down 17.0 percent; Canada, 84,447, down 6.3 percent; Guatemala, 77,764 tons, up 3.6 percent; Angola, 58,424 tons, down 15.6 percent; Vietnam, 53,151 tons, down 6.3 percent; Congo (Brazzaville), 44,669 tons, up 10.4 percent.

Broiler exports in July 2023 were 287,652 metric tons, down 4.1 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $390.1 million, down 14.1 percent. Shipments to Mexico increased by 19.3 percent year over year to 57,906 metric tons, while exports to China decreased by 36.6 percent to 32,987 tons (of which 70.9 percent or 23,395 metric tons were chicken paws). Shipments to Cuba increased by 16.4 percent to 24,297 tons, while exports to Taiwan rose by 4.8 percent to 22,857 tons. While exports to Hong Kong, Dominican Republic, Georgia, Qatar, Peru, Turkmenistan, Guatemala, and Costa Rica increased notably year over year, exports to Vietnam, Ghana, Haiti, Angola, Philippines, Singapore, and Gambia decreased significantly.

Cumulative turkey exports for the first seven months of this year were 110,585 metric tons, down 2.1 percent from the same period a year earlier, while export value was $333.0 million, down 10.4 percent (Figure 2). Of the total quantity exported, 81.0 percent or 89,597 metric tons were shipped to the top six markets, including Mexico, Canada, Peru, Jamaica, Benin, and Vietnam, with Mexico alone accounting for 68.6 percent or 75,871 metric tons.

Turkey exports in July 2023 reached 19,901 metric tons, up 32.1 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $51.0 million, down 7.0 percent. Shipments to Mexico increased by 36.9 percent to 13,497 metric tons, while exports to Canada decreased by 11.4 percent to 688 metric tons. Exports to Benin were 545 metric tons, down 7.2 percent yere over year, while shipments to Peru reached 508 metric tons, as compared to 28 metric tons for the same month a year earlier.

While exports to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Gabon, Haiti, Taiwan, Japan, and Leeward-Windward Islands increased notably, shipments to Angola, China, Guatemala, and Chile decreased significantly.

Total egg exports (table eggs plus egg products in shell egg equivalent) for January through July this year increased by 6.5 percent to 106.0 million dozen. The value of those exports increased by 37.3 percent to $187.5 million (Figure 3).

Cumulative exports of table eggs for the first seven months of this year were 51.3 million dozen, up 26.6 percent from the same period of last year, while export value reached $105.9 million, up 63.3 percent. Of the total shipments, 87.2 percent or 44.8 million dozen were shipped to the top six export markets, namely Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, Bahamas, United Kingdom, and Netherlands Antilles.

Table egg exports for July 2023 reached 6.2 million dozen, up 165 percent from the same month a year earlier, while export value was $7.4 million, up 64.4 percent, thanks largely to increased exports to Canada and Mexico. July exports to Canada hit 2.2 million dozen, as compared to 120,588 dozen for the same month a year earlier, while exports to Mexica reached 1.4 million dozen, as compared to zero dozen for July 2022. Exports to Hong Kong, Japan, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, and Netherlands Antilles also increased notably.

For egg products, exports in January-July 2023 totaled 19,220 metric tons, up 31.7 percent from the same period of last year, while export value reached $81.6 million, up 13.8 percent. Exports to the top six markets including Japan, Mexico, EU-27, Canada, South Korea, and Bahamas accounted for 89.3 percent or $72.9 million.

July exports of egg products reached 2,192 metric tons, up 63.1 percent from the same month of last year, while export value was $10.5 million, up 22.1 percent. Export sales to Japan reached $4.6 million, up 32.4 percent year over year, while exports to Mexico hit $2.7 million, up 123 percent. While export sales to Australia, Panama, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Kuwait increased notably, exports to EU-27, South Korea, and Canada decreased significantly. – By Dr. Renan Zhuang.
