Brazil Confirms First Outbreak of HPAI in a Backyard Flock

Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) this week confirmed the first detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) in a backyard production where there were ducks, geese, and chickens. The detection was made in the municipality of Serra, in the state of Espírito Santo.

The case had not been posted to the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH) website as of the MondayLine deadline. But Brazilian authorities stated that the new outbreak will not result in restrictions on international trade of Brazilian poultry products and that consumption and export of Brazilian poultry products “remain safe.”

Therefore, it appears that Brazil is classifying the detection as a backyard non-poultry finding. A small number of markets do apply restrictions for non-poultry findings, however, and Japan already has announced a state level restriction for Brazilian products from the state of Espirito Santo.

There have been 52 other detections in wild birds in the states of Espírito Santo, Bahia, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo since the virus entered Brazil on May 15.
